The ‘HMS Daring’, commissioned in 2009, is the first of six vessels of the new Type 45 class. Each Type 45 Destroyer has an IEP (Integrated Electric Propulsion) system consisting of two gas turbine alternators and two Wärtsilä 12V200 diesel alternators.
The Type 45 destroyers are fitted with M series stern shaft seals. An innovative wrapped bellows design, incorporating fully or partially split assemblies, enables installation and service of the equipment without the need to remove the propeller or tail-shaft. These ships are the most advanced destroyers ever built for the UK’s Royal Navy, and are to enter service by 2014.
